A horrible practice by Hollywood and the Fashion and Advertising industries. Distorting the lighting, coloring, lines and features of a celebrity or model's photograph quite literally paints an inaccurate and, often, impossible image for consumers to aspire to. Do you want to know why you nor none of your friends can seem to fit into that Michael Kors dress in the same way you saw in the catalogue? That's because not even the model was fitting into it that way. The model is simply a template from which the photoshoppers work, cinching waists, harmonizing features, blowing out hair, defining cheekbones, and bulking up some areas while toning others down. Models are already super-skinny, but for those who are frighteningly thin, the photoshopper will hide their protruding ribcages or sunken eyes. Yes, models have become so thin by torturing their bodies into this unrealistic image of rail-thin physique that photoshoppers now have to bulk them up more digitally, so that they actually look healthy.

Models and celebrities are paid to maintain an image of themselves - that is their paycheck and focus. It is unreasonable and, in so many cases, unhealthy for the average person juggling all of normal life's responsibilities to aspire to match their "shape," which is not even their own but an enhanced caricature of them crafted by artists. Photoshop is an amazing tool but has been used for devastating ends as this practice continues to instill self-loathing and unrealistic goals in our populace's psyche.
