  • Babies' cries
- If you've ever been on an airplane, you know all about this. You wouldn't intuitively associate your species' young with an annoyed feeling, but it turns out that because babies are, by definition, the essence of our survival as a species, it is imperative to pay attention to them when they are crying, and our brains are actually hardwired to pay particular attention to the sound of a baby's cry, even when we are not the parent of it, or parents at all. A recent study found that after hearing a baby's cry, we are more alert and have better motor coordination;p[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[l. This makes sense - there is a distinct benefit to being able to respond, physically, to a situation that may be endangering a baby. The problem is that this state of alertness triggered by the sound of a baby's cry translates into an annoyance in modern life, where, most likely the baby isn't in danger, but you just can't "turn off" the sound of its cry in your head.

- Hurts like a son-of-a bitch, and it makes you look like a heroin-addict.

(These two annoyances are unrelated).
