CMB for short, is the residual faint glow of Big Bang that fills the universe. It gives a snapshot from from 14 billion years ago from early development of the universe. Before the formation of stars and planets, when the universe was much smaller and hotter, it was filled with a glow of hydrogen plasma. As the universe expanded, the plasma and the radiation became cooler. When the universe cooled enough, the stable atoms, then molecules etc. formed. Then photons could escape from plasma which absorbs energetic photos and starts their traveling. The photons from that time have been propagating ever since, growing less and less energetic but coming to this day to bring joy and pleasure to us humans.
