From the german bildung meaning "formation" and roman meaning "novel," a bildungsroman is a coming of age story, dealing with the development of a young protagonist. The term entered English around 1905, though this type of story was told in our language for centuries before it had a name. Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce, and Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling are all examples of bildungsroman.
