The name of this symbol: &

The ampersand today is used primarily in business names, but that small character was once the 27th part of the alphabet. The Romans used to write et, which means and in latin, as e and t connected to each other, and it was accepted as one of the letters of the english alphabet. The symbol also clearly reflected this origin, showing e and t distinctively as can be seen form this link on William Caslon: script later the letter was dropped from the alphabet and now the symbol & is used exclusively in brand names or ads. Daily usage of the symbol simply dropped.
